New Research on Epilepsy

Image
Researchers from the Neurology Research Group in the Swansea University Medical School found that exposure to #epilepsy drugs in the womb is linked to significantly poorer school test results among 7 year olds. Women with epilepsy who need drugs to control their seizures are currently advised to continue taking them during pregnancy because convulsions can harm both mother and the unborn child. Several studies indicate that epilepsy #drugs, particularly sodium valproate, taken during pregnancy, are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, but few of these studies have been based on real-life population circumstances (population data). Prescription patterns were divided into five categories: treatment with one drug (carbamazepine, lamotrigine or sodium valproate); a combination of several drugs; and no drug treatment. Twenty (54%) of the 39 mums prescribed several drugs were taking sodium valproate, but there were 15 different drug combinations in all. The results showed that chi…

Parkinson's Disease

PD is a #neurodegenerative disorder, which leads to progressive deterioration of motor function due to loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. The cause of #Parkinson’s Disease is unknown, but researchers speculate that both genetic and environmental factors are involved. Some genes have been linked to the disease.... #Alzheimers2018 #Neurology #Conference

In a study it was found that bassoon #gene mutations may help explain the cause of a disease that drastically impairs walking and thinking resulting in #neurologicaldisorders, which is involved with the central #nervous system, in patients with symptoms similar to, but different from, a rare brain disorder called progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). #Dementia #Alzheimers2018 #Conference

In a recent #study it is proved that #physicallyfit women have nearly 90 percent less likely to develop #dementia then those who are #moderatelyfit. Results were obtained from a study which measured women's #cardiovascular fitness based on an exercise test.

A #compound in beets that gives the vegetable its distinctive red color could help slow the accumulation of misfolded proteins in the #brain, a process associated with #Alzheimer's disease.Scientists say this could lead to the development of drugs that could alleviate some of the long-term effects of the #disease, the world's leading cause of #dementia.
